DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESIA & ICU

Introduction

It is well known fact that the Department of Anaesthesia in any hospital setup works as the backbone, because of the nature of services it provides to various surgical and nonsurgical departments of the hospital. The Department of Anesthesiology is one of the largest departments of the LBS  hospital We provide perioperative and intensive care services for a large number of patients not only from Delhi but adjoining states and other parts of the country too. All clinical departments are anchored to this specialty. The number of anaesthetics administered continues to increase annually. We also have a 6 bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Mission

Our mission is to provide the highest standards of Anaesthesia, intensive care, pain management and related services for the community and to successfully integrate this with all the other clinical disciplines of the hospital, in a manner that is holistic, humanitarian and patient-centered with an emphasis on human dignity.

Objectives and Function

  1. To provide anesthesia, intensive care and related services of high quality and consistent with established high standards of care.
  2. To increase awareness among patients and other caregivers about anaesthesia and the role anaesthetists play in their treatment and eventual recovery.
  3. To actively carry out Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for the staff of the department inclusive of doctors, nurse and paramedics as we believe that such activities will eventually translate into high standards of patient care. 
  4. To promote good teamwork and excellent working relationships among all members of the department. 
  5. To carry out continuous quality improvement activities so that it becomes a tool for improving the standard of services and is institutionalized in the department. 
  6. To provide emergency care for code blue calls. Anaesthesiologist functions as one of the main members of code blue team.
  7. To provide services during disaster management

Operation Theatre Services

There is one Elective Operation theatre (M.O.T.) with 02 (Two) O.T. Tables and one Emergency Operation theatre ( E.O.T.) in causality Block with 02(Two) O.T. tables .There are 02 No.s of Minor O.Ts. one in Casualty Block and another in OPD Block. The Operation Theatres are well equipped with modern equipments.

Pre Anaesthetic Clinic ( PAC)

There is one Pre Anaesthetic Clinic (PAC) at Room no. 15 near Emergency O.T. which works from 9 AM to 1 PM daily on weekdays. The indoor and outdoor patients who are scheduled for surgical are screened here for their fitness and suitability to undergo surgical procedure. Emergency PAC’s are done round the clock 24 hrs. Immobile patients are provided bedside PAC whenever call is received.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The department has a 6 bedded state of art mixed medical-surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Critically ill patients are admitted in the ICU. The ICU is equipped with best ventilators and monitoring gadgets with adequate facilities for bedside procedures and point-of-care tests. A team of dedicated intensivists provide round-the-clock critical care services to the admitted patients. 

Gas Store & Central Gas Supply System

 Medical gas Pipeline System provides uninterrupted’ oxygen supply  Intensive Care Unit( ICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit(NICU). Manifold has 4*4 D type cylinder provision with automatic switchover to other side once oxygen cylinders of the running side gets empty.  There is also a provision in the manifold room to supply oxygen to the pipeline even if there is major fault of both sides of the 4*4 Manifold system through D Type cylinders. An addition safety precaution has been taken to provide oxygen supply directly inside ICU pipeline through D type oxygen cylinder in the ICU. For other areas of the hospital Oxygen Cylinders are provided by the Gas Store. Gas Store also stores and supplies Carbon dioxide, Nitrous Oxide and Air cylinders to be used in operation theatres.

Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)

The central sterile services department (CSSD) performs sterilization and other actions on medical devices, equipment and consumables; for subsequent use by health workers in the operation theatre and other areas of the hospital. CSSD has four Autoclaves and works from 9 AM to 4 PM. Emergency Autoclaves are done 24 hours by the Technical staff posted in Emergency O.T.
