Brief History and Background of Establishment

The institute has a glorious journey from nursing school to college of Nursing. The School of Nursing attached to Lok Nayak Hospital was established in the year 1936 with intake of 15 students.  It was one of the largest school of nursing in Delhi under the Delhi administration. 

The General Nursing Council and Midwifery course was of three and half year’s duration with two intakes.  In the year 1986 the Indian Nursing Council had revised the General Nursing and Midwifery course to 3 years duration with only one intake in a year.

School of Nursing was upgraded in July 1993 to College of Nursing and the institute named as AHILYA BAI COLLEGE OF NURSING, LOK NAYAK HOSPITAL, NEW DELHI.  B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing course offered by the institute is affiliated from University of Delhi and this B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing course is having four academic years, inclusive of internship. The Four Academic year is further divided into 8 semesters.

AHILYA BAI COLLEGE OF NURSING having affiliated hospital for imparting practical training i.e. Lok Nayak Hospital (Formerly known as Irwin Hospital) with 2053 beds, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital with 735 beds and Guru Nanak Eye Centre 212 beds respectively.

Brief about the Course

The purpose of the course is to assist the students to become a professional nurse who is committed to the promotion of health, prevention of disease and care and rehabilitation of the clients.  Nursing is concerned with the individual patient, family and community.  The college provides opportunities necessary in the practice of nursing. The curriculum has been planned to provide breadth of knowledge to situations where the nurse will work as a member of health team for group of patients, families, community in urban and rural areas.

The aim of the undergraduate nursing program is to :-

·         Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses and midwives in providing pro motive, curative and rehabilitative services.

·         Prepare nurses who can make independent decision in nursing, protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health function in the hospital, community health nursing service and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor and manage clinical/public health setting.

On completion of the four year B.Sc. Nursing programme the graduate will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge from physical biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative system and Nursing for providing care to individual families and communities.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of lifestyle and other factors, which affect health of individual and groups.
  3. Provide nursing care base on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups.
